Have you read: ‘For Whom the Bells Toll’, by Ernest Hemmingway?

I should add, have you read anything by Ernest Hemmingway? If you answered no to either of these questions, it is time you did. I waited way too long. This would be a good one to start with!

If you did not know, let me share it with you. Hemmingway wrote this book in 1939 in a Hotel in Cuba where he was living at the time. The story is loosely based on his participation in the Spanish Civil War from 1936 – 1939. This was a part of history, which preceded World War II and if you are a student of this period you would recognize some of the Characters and of course the events.

Many foreigners (non-Spaniards) have joined the International Brigades (a Communist & Socialist supported organization) to help the Republicans fight the Fascists Regime of Franco. They were upward of about forty thousand from all over the world and Ernest Hemingway was one of those foreigners who actually entered into the conflict. (Today we would say he walked the walk, talked the talkJ )

So you might ask me, so why did I love this book? The answer is easy, it had everything: War, Violence, Romance, Drama, Tragedy, Moral Conflict, Loyalty, Value systems, Religion and Inner Reflections.  In addition I love politically and morally complex books, because they make me thinkJ

The best part of it was that it was an easy read about a series of complex issues. There were also the various moral dilemmas that the various characters had to face as events unfolded daily and I found it interesting how each individual took those moments and how they handled them. Paralleling how we as Realtors have to handle and make decision based on events on a daily basis with our moral compass intact too.

On a side note:  there was a movie with the same name Gary Cooper played in it in the mid 1940’s I saw it once when I was in High School, but had zero recollection outside of the fact that there was a Bridge that they needed to blow up.
