La Habra, CA  Earthquake: 5.3 magnitude on the Richter Scale!

First and foremost I would like to thank all of you who sent emails, calls and comments about us being safe. We were fine and thank you for your care and concern.

Those of you who know me and read my blog posts know we live in Marina del Rey, CA., if you did a Google search you would realize that it is about 34+/- miles from where we live on the Freeway. As the crow flies it might be about 25-28 miles.

Of course the interesting part for those who never experienced an earthquake, the actual earthquake and its effects could vary in many ways. Just as our reaction on how we are affected by it depends on which fault line was shaking. This particular one is a fault line that goes towards downtown Los Angeles, never the less we had friends who did not feel it in Sherman Oaks, nor in Brentwood to name a few places.

To us this felt like a wave. It got out attention, we are very grateful that all it did was scaring us a bit. We feel bad for the people who were actually effected most, those were the twenty some odd apartment and condo dwellers in La Habra. From what I heard no one was injured and that is the main thing.

Customarily if the earthquake is near and under 3.2 magnitude it is hardly noticed by anyone. Once the magnitude increases then potentially the damage and or the reaction you have will increase. Usually this whole affair lasts less than 30 seconds but your emotional reaction makes it feel like an eternity.

So what did we do after it? Nothing continued with our evening ritual, listen to music and enjoy dinner and go about our normal routine. What should we have done? We should have gone over our emergency procedures, check our emergency kit and do practice drills. Oh well maybe next timeJ
